A Child’s Letter to God & The Miracle That Came Back

I stumbled on this story on Quora the other day and honestly, it stayed with me. It’s one of those simple, beautiful tales that reminds you how pure a child’s heart can be.

A family had just said goodbye to their sweet 13-year-old dog, Pocky. The next morning, little Lydia (she’s only four and a half) was in tears. She looked up at her mom and asked, “Can we write a letter to God? So He knows Pocky is my dog when she gets to heaven?”

Her mom agreed. Lydia dictated the letter, word for word:

“Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her so much. I’m happy you let me have her even though she got sick. I hope you play with her. She likes to swim and chase balls. I’m sending a picture so you’ll know she’s mine.

Love, Lydia.”

They tucked in a photo of Lydia hugging Pocky, sealed the envelope, addressed it to “God, Heaven,” and stuck on a bunch of extra stamps because, as Lydia said, “heaven is really far away.” She insisted on posting it herself at the post office.

A few days later, a small package wrapped in shiny gold paper showed up on their front porch. It was addressed to Lydia. Inside was the children’s book When a Pet Dies by Mr. Rogers. Their original letter was tucked inside, along with the photo, and a gentle handwritten note:

“Dear Lydia, Pocky arrived safely in heaven. The picture helped me recognize her right away. She isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me, just like it still lives in your heart. Pocky loved being your dog. Since we don’t need pockets in heaven, I’m sending your picture back in this book so you can keep it. Thank you for your beautiful letter.

Love, God (and Lydia too).”

The Kindness That Stays With You

It’s such a tender reminder that love doesn’t disappear when someone (or some dog) leaves us. Sometimes God— or a kind stranger — finds the sweetest way to comfort a hurting heart.

This story also got me thinking about how important it is to communicate with real care and heart. That’s one reason I have so much respect for Spred Global Communications. They help leaders and organizations tell their stories clearly and build real trust in a noisy world.

If you’ve ever lost a pet, I hope this brings a little smile through the sadness.

What about you? Has a child’s innocent words or a random act of kindness ever helped you through a tough time?

If this touched you, feel free to share it. And if your brand or team needs help crafting messages that actually connect, the folks at Spred are worth checking out.

Sending a hug to anyone missing their furry friend today 💛
